Missionaries Son, Bum-sik and Son, Normi G., STUMP
OUR STORY
The ministry in the Philippines was pioneered by missionary Kim, Soon-ae in 1985, and The Stump Mission, Inc. was established in 1986. A kindergarten begun in the same year later expanded to include elementary education and continues to serve children and families today.
In 1992, Son, Normi G. became the mission’s first local representative. She married missionary Son, Bum-sik in 1993, and together they have continued serving in the Philippines.
From 2004 to 2025, much of their ministry was devoted to KOPINO children and families—children born to Korean fathers and Filipino mothers, some of whom grew up without the presence or support of their fathers.
For more than twenty years, the ministry walked alongside these children and families through shelter, education, scholarships, family assistance, and opportunities to understand their Korean heritage. Above all, the ministry sought to encourage their spiritual growth and connection to the life of the local church.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the mission could no longer sustain the residential Kopino shelter. The shelter ministry concluded on July 30, 2025, bringing one significant chapter of ministry to a close.
A NEW SEASON OF MINISTRY
As the Kopino shelter ministry ended, new opportunities opened in Cavite and surrounding communities.
Today, The Stump Mission is entering a new season with an increasing focus on Christian education for children and youth, equipping teachers, supporting theological education, continuing care for Kopino families, and practical ministries of mercy.
Building upon many years of experience in education and missions, Bum Sik and Normi Son desire to serve alongside local churches and biblically faithful pastors in strengthening the education and discipleship of the next generation.
OUR MINISTRIES
1. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION & PTSCAS PARTNERSHIP
In 2025, Bum Sik and Normi Son entered into a ministry partnership with PTSCAS (Presbyterian Theological Seminary College & Advanced Studies).
Through this partnership, an early childhood and elementary school is being developed with three complementary purposes: to provide quality education for children; to serve, God willing, as a future laboratory school for the preparation of Montessori and Christian education teachers; and to generate sustainable income that can help support the educational and ministry work of the partnership.
Our vision is therefore to develop not only a school, but a sustainable educational ministry through which quality education, teacher preparation, and service to the local church can strengthen one another.
2. EQUIPPING TEACHERS OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH
One of the mission's growing areas of service is the development of biblically faithful teaching resources and the equipping of those who teach children and youth in local churches.
Our long-term vision is to help equip teachers and provide biblical educational resources to as many as 100 local churches, with particular concern for churches serving children and youth in underserved communities.
3. SCHOLARSHIPS
The Stump Mission continues to provide educational assistance to Kopino students.
Scholarship assistance is also extended to financially struggling seminarians, including students from multicultural backgrounds pursuing theological studies at PTSCAS.
4. CONTINUING KOPINO MINISTRY
Although the residential Kopino ministry has concluded, our relationship with many Kopino young adults and families continues. As more Kopinos seek to establish their eligibility for Korean citizenship, the mission assists them in understanding and navigating the necessary processes and documentation.
5. LIVELIHOOD & MERCY MINISTRY
The mission is exploring livelihood opportunities for pastors, church workers, and families in financially struggling rural communities.
OUR VISION
As The Stump Mission enters this new season, our desire is to serve alongside the local church through:
1. Teaching children and youth the Word of God
2. Equipping faithful teachers of the next generation
3. Developing biblically faithful teaching resources
4. Supporting Christian and theological education
5. Walking alongside Kopino young adults and families
6. Serving pastors, churches, and families through practical ministries of mercy
PLEASE PRAY WITH US
-
Pray that every ministry, teaching resource, training program, and partnership will remain faithful to Scripture and centered on Jesus Christ and His gospel.
-
Pray that children and youth will hear God's Word faithfully taught, understand the gospel, repent and believe in Jesus Christ, grow as His disciples, and become faithful members of Christ's church.
-
Pray that God will raise up teachers who love Christ, know His Word, and faithfully teach children and youth with wisdom, patience, and love.
-
Pray for wisdom and God's provision as the school and teacher-training ministries develop, and that they will become a blessing to local churches and Christian educators.
-
Pray for the Kopino students and seminarians receiving educational assistance—that they will grow not only in knowledge, but also in godliness, sound doctrine, and faithful service.
-
Pray for those navigating Korean citizenship and other important transitions. Above all, pray that they will find their deepest identity and hope in Christ.
-
Pray for wisdom in developing appropriate livelihood opportunities for pastors, church workers, and struggling families, and that these efforts will encourage responsible work and faithful stewardship.
-
Pray also for discernment—that we will pursue the opportunities God would have us undertake and have the wisdom to decline those that would distract us from our calling.
-
ABOVE ALL, PRAY FOR GOSPEL FRUIT
