The Botswana Stump Mission Story

The Botswana mission began in 1987 with the arrival of the first Korean missionaries, who secured official government approval for the mission organization and the Stump Vocational Training Institute. On land provided rent-free in the Good Hope area, the early pioneers cleared the bush to build essential facilities, including an auditorium, classrooms, a dormitory, and missionary housing. Working with local chiefs, they recruited students for vocational training. The school nurtured a community centered on practical skills training, Bible study, and communal worship.

After completing their service in Botswana, the missionaries from this station were sent to serve in Zimbabwe and Zambia. This land is also the final resting place of two beloved missionaries and a young child.

Missionaries Kim, Joo-hyun and Park, Choon-nam, STUMP

Missionary Kim, Joo-hyun arrived in Botswana in 1987, Missionary Park, Choon-nam in 1990. Both came as skilled-trade missionaries and have faithfully served as self-supporting missionaries ever since, working to help establish sustainable, self-supporting mission ministries.

From the early days of Stump Mission to the present, they have continued to carry out the business ministry that has been central to the mission's vision of self-sufficiency.

Throughout the many challenges and hardships faced by Stump Mission in Botswana, they have remained steadfast at their posts while many others have moved on. They not only provided generous support when the Stump Mission headquarters faced difficult circumstances, but also continued to assist Stump missionaries who remained on the mission field even after the organization was dissolved.

Even today, through their business operations, they continue to support the financial self-sufficiency of missionaries serving in Botswana, Zambia, and other regions.

They also actively support ministries that equip second-generation missionary children—MKs (Missionary Kids), also known as Third Culture Kids (TCKs)—to follow in their parents' footsteps and commit themselves to missionary service. In addition, they support MKs who have committed themselves to becoming missionaries.

Through the Happy Home ministry, they provide meals to children from impoverished families and orphans in the local community. Working alongside volunteers, they also support the children's education and share God's love through Bible reading, art, music lessons, and Taekwondo. On Sundays, the children and volunteers gather for worship and Bible study.

Our Vision

By the grace of the Lord, we are committed to business as mission, supporting missionaries and MKs (Missionary Kids) who have dedicated their lives to missions. We also seek to inspire and encourage MKs to respond to God’s call and dedicate their lives to serving as missionaries.

We also seek to care for, educate, and nurture disadvantaged children in the local community by sharing the Gospel and helping them find true hope in Jesus Christ. Our mission is to equip these children to grow in faith and gratitude, rooted in God’s love, and become compassionate leaders who care for and serve others in need.

PLEASE PRAY WITH US

  2. For Wisdom and Discernment: Pray that God will grant us wisdom, understanding, discernment, and sound judgment in all aspects of our ministry.

  3. For Humble Service: Pray that we will serve as humble, self-supporting missionaries, giving all glory to the Lord.

  4. For the Children at Happy Home: Pray that the children will become born-again believers and grow into faithful Christian leaders in Botswana.

  5. For Our Children: Pray that our children will follow in our footsteps and serve the Lord as missionaries.

Missionaries Kim, Jong-arm and Hong, Jong-soon, STUMP

Missionary Kim, Jong-arm, who currently oversees our ministry in Good Hope, Botswana, arrived in Botswana in 2006 with his wife, Missionary Hong, Jong-soon, a graduate of the Stump missionary training program.

His passion for missions began during his seminary years. In 1996, during a short-term mission trip to Africa, he was deeply moved by the poverty of children in Kenya and felt called to dedicate his life to serving them. Ten years later, guided by Acts 16:9, he answered the call to serve in Botswana: “And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’”

Recognizing the need to strengthen the theological foundations of local pastors, he partnered with missionaries in South Africa to organize seminars and established Africa Bible Base Academy (ABBA) to provide ongoing theological training.

In response to years of prayer for a structured theological education program offering academic degrees, government approval was granted in May 2026. On August 12, 2026, the ministry celebrated the opening of ABBA Bible College, marking a significant milestone in the development of theological education and leadership training in Botswana.

  3. For Strength: May God sustain us in spiritual and physical health, enabling us to remain faithful to our calling to the very end.
